How to Know if Your Son is Addicted to Heroin

How can you know if your son is addicted to heroin?

Finding out that your son is addicted to heroin, while a horrifying discovery, is better done sooner than later. The bottom line is, if your son is addicted to heroin and you find out about it something can be done. Opioid addiction is not something to let left alone. This is because opioids are so dangerous and overdose is so easy. In this article we’ll teach you the top four things to look out for if you suspect that your loved one is abusing opiates.

Signs of opiate abuse

Number One - Constantly needing to leave the room or go to a different environment

One thing to be on the lookout for is if your loved one is always getting up from the dinner table or leaving the room for unknown reasons. Another big thing to notice is if they constantly have an excuse to leave the house, this is especially noticeable now that we're coming up on Christmas break. If a loved one is home for the holidays and you find they're always coming up with excuses to leave and go to the store there's a good chance that something fishy is going on and you should take a closer look.

Number Two - Falling asleep in strange and awkward situations

If you find your loved one falling asleep constantly or seeming to nod off in situations where everyone else is awake there may be something going on. While this can be a symptom of more than just addiction and things like depression or other dual diagnosis issues could be a play - a lot of times this is classic behavior for someone that's actually using opiates. It's important to ask questions and notice when the stuff is going on. It can also be handy to have a drug test on hand if and when you notice these kinds of behaviors coming up. Again this is easier to identify during the winter months when loved ones are home from college or on winter break when you see them more frequently.

Number Three - Finding black fingerprints on walls, steering wheels and other parts of your home

While this may seem like a strange symptom of someone using heroin, it's actually one of the most common ways that heroin addicts get caught. This is because when someone is smoking heroin off of tin foil a thick layer of residue develops on the underside of the foil. The burnt foil often gets all over the user's hands and even when they don't expect it can find its way onto all sorts of different environments and surfaces. One of the common symptoms of someone that's under the influence of opiates is constant scratching. This can lead an addict to scratching their face or nose and as a result getting black fingerprints on their face without them realizing it. If you notice your loved one with black fingerprints on their face there's good reason to look out and give them a drug test.

Number Four - Wildly changed behavior

If you notice that your loved one has all of a sudden become sullen, removed, withdrawn or unwilling to engage in life in the way that they used to - there's a good chance that addiction is it play. Heroin is notorious for getting individuals to change their personalities and causing them to disconnect from their family and friends. Often times this is one of the biggest and in most clear symptoms that a parent can find when they notice that their son is acting very differently. Heroin addicts get very defensive if you try to get in the way of their using and this is something that needs to be paid attention to.
